I See You

Twenty-six years ago, my daddy became a sober man. He went through hell and back, but he finally got the help he needed. It was that help, that made him the amazing man and father he is today.

A couple years ago, I met someone who was in the exact same place my dad was 26 years ago. He chose to not get help, and quit on his own will power. We started dating and about a month into our relationship, I realized he was a really good manipulator. He would screw up and somehow try to make it my fault. He knew that every time he would screw up, all he had to do was say “I’m sorry” and he had me. He would promise never to do it again and I would forgive him.

This behavior went on for a while. He told me he loved me….then he dropped off the face of the planet and I didn’t hear from him for 3 months. Just like that, he was gone. I was a complete wreck…I ran myself through hell thinking the worst had happened because he wouldn’t answer my texts and my phone calls would go straight to his voicemail. Honestly, I should’ve seen it then. I should’ve seen (and known) that these were the classic signs of an addict. Manipulation, making everything somehow my fault, apologizing and promising never to do it again, telling me he loved me (and obviously not really meaning it)…it was all there.

But I was too naive. I loved him (and I told him so), I would do anything for him and he knew that. He took advantage of that for sure. During this relationship, he led me to believe that I deserved to have a man in my life like him. I thought he truly loved me. I thought we were going to be together. But I was wrong. He was using me. He was using me to fill a void in his life.

After falling off the face of the earth practically, he contacted me out of the blue. He told me he was clean but I knew that wasn’t true. His own will power only lasted him a few months (I knew it was only a matter of time), and he soon became slave to the bottle again. He told me he felt worthless, like a disappointment and that he was a screw up. Now that broke my heart in two. Did he do it to himself? yes. Did he deserve it? Absolutely not. I walked away from that relationship emotionally tired. I’m a helper by nature, so naturally I wanted to fix this. I wanted to help him, but I knew he had to do it himself. Watching this unfold was hard and it messed with me for a while.

Everyone deserves to be loved. He just wanted someone to say “I see you” and “I’m here for you” and “you’re not alone”. I see you brother (or sister!), I see your pain. I see your hurt. I know you want to quit. You know the steps, you know what you need to do. So go get help and quit. That’s a lot easier said than done.

Through that time, I realized….I want to help people like my daddy and like this man who I thought truly loved me. Through that bad relationship, I actually have him to thank believe it or not. Because I found what I was actually meant to do. This year, I became a certified drug and alcohol technician. And I now am in the process of getting a full time job at a rehab facility as a substance abuse counselor. It was through this, that I realized I never want someone to feel how I felt and I never want someone to feel like they’re not worth anything because of their life choices.

Everyone deserves to be loved and seen…they are God’s child. Whether they believe or not. They are still (and always will be) His. Being a counselor is really, really hard. It takes an emotional toll. But at the end of the day, you’re being the hands and feet of Jesus. You’re helping these broken people get the help they need and helping them realize that they don’t need to keep doing this. Some want the help, others don’t. But just knowing that there’s help out there and that you don’t have to walk this path alone. I will be there to fight with you. This is your fight, no one can fight it for you. You have to want it. You have to want the help. You have to do the work, but please know……I will be there to walk it with you 1000%.

I see you, you are loved. You matter. You are worth something. 💕

Another in The Fire

cullan-smith-543341-unsplash

The phrase “another in the fire” actually alludes to, is the Biblical story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego found in the Old Testament book of Daniel. Even if it feels like there’s a lack of resolution and what you’re in the midst of doesn’t make sense and you don’t know where you’re headed, the X factor in all of that is actually that you’re not alone.

Regardless of what circumstances you face or you’re going to face, remember you’ve never been alone, you never are alone, and you never will be alone. The in-between is okay, it doesn’t affect true things being true, they’re still true. It’s sometimes a truth that they’re here and its not yours just yet, or its a truth that’s here and yet to come, and that’s okay. The key to this song is that you’re never alone.

There’s a grace when the heart is under fire
Another way when the walls are closing in
And when I look at the space between
Where I used to be and this reckoning
I know I will never be alone
There was another in the fire
Standing next to me
There was another in the waters
Holding back the seas
And should I ever need reminding
Of how I’ve been set free
There is a cross that bears the burden
Where another died for me
There is another in the fire
All my debt left for dead beneath the waters
I’m no longer a slave to my sin anymore
And should I fall in the space between
What remains of me and this reckoning
Either way I won’t bow to the things of this world
And I know I will never be alone
There is another in the fire
Standing next to me
There is another in the waters
Holding back the seas
And should I ever need reminding
What power set me free
There is a grave that holds no body
And now that power lives in me
There is another in the fire, oh
There is another in the fire, whoa
There is another in the fire, whoa
There is another in the fire, oh
I can see
And I can see the light in the darkness
As the darkness bows to Him
I can hear the roar in the heavens
As the space between wears thin
I can feel the ground shake beneath us
As the prison walls cave in
Nothing stands between us
Nothing stands between us
There is no other name but the name that is Jesus
He who was and still is, and will be through it all
So come what may in the space between
All the things unseen and this reckoning
And I know I will never be alone
And I know I will never be alone
There’ll be another in the fire
Standing next to me
There’ll be another in the waters
Holding back the seas
And should I ever need reminding
How good You’ve been to me
I’ll count the joy come every battle
‘Cause I know that’s where You’ll be
I can see the light
And I can see the light in the darkness
As the darkness bows to Him
I can hear the roar in the heavens
As the space between wears thin
I can feel the ground shake beneath us
As the prison walls cave in
Nothing stands between us
Nothing stands between
There’ll be another in the fire
Standing next to me
There’ll be another in the waters
Holding back the seas
And should I ever need reminding
How good You’ve been to me
I’ll count the joy come every battle
‘Cause I know that’s where You’ll be
Count the joy come every battle
‘Cause I know that’s where You’ll be
I’ll count the joy come every battle
‘Cause I know that’s where You’ll be,
I’ll count the joy come every battle
‘Cause I know that’s where You’ll be
I’ll count the joy come every battle
‘Cause I know that’s where You’ll be

Here’s My Heart…

e0XyA2z5dWi

Showing someone your heart can be a scary thing. To have someone else in the world know you inside out, all your dreams, hopes, fears, circumstances, dashed memories and ultimate triumphs, everything within your innermost being; is something even I can’t necessarily fathom. Sure, sharing your heart with your spouse and your family is one thing but to actually talk to someone else (not related to you) and share everything about yourself and hope their reaction isn’t one of disdain or dismay can take courage from the person sharing. But there comes a point when you realize-sharing with friends and family is one thing-you can see the reaction on their faces and whether it’s of approval or disappointment. Sharing your innermost thoughts with God, who indeed already knows what you’re thinking, feeling, and even believing is on a whole other level entirely.

Here’s My Heart, originally recorded by David Crowder on his own album Neon Steeple, there is a vulnerableness about “Here’s My Heart” that I haven’t really heard much in worship music in a long time- perhaps even since songs like “Lord I Lift Your Name on High” and “Shout to the Lord”. In it, we are shown a heartfelt and poignant plea, from us to the Lord, as the lyrics declare “here’s my heart, Lord, speak what is true”. What a vulnerable and confronting melody and lyric line to keep repeating.

Am I even willing enough to show God my deepest thoughts and secrets (because honestly, everyone has them, whether we say so or not), even with the full knowledge that he’s already known them in the first place? What does it say about my own relationship with God if I am often hesitant about coming to Him in the first place with my own queries and questions? Do I really think God isn’t able to grant me what I wish to occur in my own life and in the lives of others? These questions are rhetorical, and I’m sure everyone thinks these things every now and again. To give everything to God, and I do mean everything (your thoughts, your actions, what you do on your own when no one is watching) can be a difficult feat to accomplish, if not for the power of God’s help alone.

There’s a Bible verse in Romans that speaks about offering everything that we are to God as a living sacrifice. That everything we do and say is a representation of what we believe, and how we live is a mirror of whether we ourselves think we should offer everything to God or not. To offer everything to God, to give Him our hearts like a man gives his wife (and vice versa) requires an openness like no other. It requires us to be honest, to our friends, family and our Father in heaven. It keeps us accountable and while at times it may be hard or difficult to say what we’re thinking out loud to God when He knows it already, it is nevertheless therapeutic for us as we are reminded that once we give our hearts, our burden becomes lighter. What we carry on our own can be dropped at the foot of the cross once we discover the vastness of God’s love for each of us. Showing who we are in reference to who God is, “Here’s My Heart” reminds us that ‘…I am found, I am Yours, I am loved, I’m made pure, I have life, I can breathe, I am healed, I am free…’, all the while showing us that ‘…You are strong, You are sure, You are life, You endure, You are good, always true, You are light, breaking through…’

As I finish off this post about giving our hearts, whether to God for the first time, or even multiple times over, or even to someone else (maybe a boyfriend or girlfriend, or even between close friends); what this song has shown me is to be vulnerable, even if it means to open up more than we may like to at that current point in time. I don’t like being vulnerable, but I’ve learned it really lets those around you, know who you really are. It shows that you are human. Being vulnerable requires honesty and openness, trusting God that the person we’re divulging our lives to won’t share or shout it from the rooftops to anyone else (not unless it’s something worth shouting about).

What has “Here’s My Heart” meant to you over the last few months?  Check out the music video for the song below (from I Am They), and let me know what the song means to you personally in the comments. Til next time.

Holy Spirit…

526x297-wpC
“Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;

bring an offering and come into his courts.

 Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness;

tremble before him, all the earth. Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.”

The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved;

he will judge the peoples with equity.  Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;

let the sea resound, and all that is in it.  Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;

let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.  Let all creation rejoice before the Lord, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his faithfulness.” Psalm 96:8-13

Worship is such an amazing, powerful and beautiful thing. In the Psalms, it talks about God being enthroned upon the praises of His people. I love this picture, one of God establishing His Kingdom in a place of worship and praise. This is where the song “Holy Spirit” really started for us, it was a prayer, like Jesus taught us to pray in Matthew 6: “Let Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven.” The song “Holy Spirit” is about us, turning our hearts, affection and awareness toward God’s presence.

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”  2 Corinthians 3:17

Take a listen to this amazing song HERE and I hope you’re blessed by it.

More Than Anything….

6F035E62-F58A-46F0-86CA-863A30549131-e1517189945668

This world is tough, isn’t it? Life is full of surprises, twists, and turns that we can’t handle alone. That’s why it’s crucial that we keep our focus on Jesus. But I think that we sometimes get sidetracked by the things we need help with in this life. Our time spent with God becomes seeking Him for what He can do for us rather than just seeking Him to know Him more and to be closer to Him. Although knowing that we need Him for these things can draw us nearer, that’s not what it’s all about.

What we have to remember is anything that I could possibly need Jesus to do for me, He has already done. Whether in life or in death, in richness or poverty, in health or in sickness, in sadness or bliss; it doesn’t matter where my situation goes from there… I know that Jesus died on the cross in exchange for my life, and no matter what I face on this earth, I will be with Him when it all ends, forever.

That alone makes every trial that I can think of seem minuscule. It’s all a speck in time. So although God undoubtedly commands us to pray and make our requests known to Him (Philippians 4:6), we must look beyond our requests; beyond self, and look to the beauty of who God is rather than the ugliness that we face.

Psalm‬ ‭27:1-4‬ ‭   “The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.”

Philippians‬ ‭4:6   “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Lord, You are all I need. You are my heart’s desire, my heart’s song, my life, my love, my reason. My eyes are fixed on You because You are “I Am”. When I am faced with trials, help me to focus on You. It’s my desire to love You more than saving myself. Please help me love You more than anything. Amen

Tremble…..

maxresdefault (3)

“Tremble.” based off Psalm 97:4 which says “His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles.

I love this verse because I feel like it portrays the greatness and the splendor of Jesus and how great His light can reach and span and this song “Tremble” is one of those songs that shows the light of God. It continues to be so relevant and powerful to us because everybody experiences darkness in some form or another. Everybody knows what it is to go through a season in which you’re not sure where to go or you can’t see the way. And then Jesus shows up and that darkness just dissipates.

That for me is what changes the atmosphere of a worship service, when you can bring a song to the table that meets anyone where they’re at in their season.

Listen to Tremble HERE

“Tremble” Lyrics

Peace, bringing it all to peace
The storm surrounding me
Let it break at Your name

Still, call the sea to still
The rage in me to still
Every wave at Your name

Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus, You silence fear
Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus

Breathe, then call these bones to live
Call these lungs to sing
Once again, I will praise

Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus, You silence fear
Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus

Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus, You silence fear
Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus

Your name is a light that the shadows can’t deny
Your name cannot be overcome
Your name is alive forever lifted high
Your name cannot be overcome

Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus, You silence fear
Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus
Jesus, Jesus
Jesus, Jesus

Your name is a light that the shadows can’t deny
Your name cannot be overcome
Your name is alive forever lifted high
Your name cannot be overcome

Your name is a light that the shadows can’t deny
Your name cannot be overcome
Your name is alive forever lifted high
Your name cannot be overcome

Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus, You silence fear
Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus

Resurrection Power

Easter

Resurrection Power. When I first heard the song I was really taken by the chorus and how brilliant the melody and lyrics are and how it’s so singable. But what it’s really saying, behind the song, is what’s so powerful and what makes the song even greater.

Most of us don’t wake up every day thinking, wow I have resurrection power in my life. If you’re like me, sometimes you don’t even think about it for maybe days or weeks. But that’s what is true, and I hope when people hear this song that it reminds people that every day of their life they have the power of God and that the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ is inside of them.

Paul in the New Testament said, if the resurrection is not true then we’re all fools and most to be pitied. That’s what he said, but it is true. That’s the hope we sing about. That’s the reason there is a story to tell. That’s the reason there is hope to sing about. That is why we have church every Sunday. That is why we have hope and joy in our lives. Being brought from death to life. The old is gone, the new has come. That is what this song “Resurrection Power” is about. I hope when people sing this, when they hear this, that they realize, wow that is so true in my life.

“Resurrection Power” Lyrics by Chris Tomlin

You called me from the grave by name
You called me out of all my shame
I see the old has passed away
The new has come

Chorus
Now I have resurrection power
Living on the inside Jesus
You have given us freedom
No longer bound by sin and darkness
Living in the light of Your goodness
You have given us freedom

I’m dressed in Your royalty
Your holy spirit lives in me
I see my past has been redeemed
The new has come

(Repeat Chorus)

Bridge
Freedom
You have given us freedom
You have given us freedom
My chains are gone

Freedom
You have given us freedom
You have given us freedom
Hallelujah

(Repeat Bridge)
(Repeat Chorus 2)

I have resurrection power
Living on the inside
Living on the inside
No longer bound by sin and darkness
You have given us freedom
You have given us freedom

Reckless Love…

reckless-love

Reckless Love. Many would disagree with using a “negative” word to describe His love. The phrase “the reckless love of God” is not at all saying that God Himself is reckless. Rather, the way He loves, is in many regards, quite so. What I mean is this: He is utterly unconcerned with the consequences of His actions with regards to His own safety, comfort, and well-being. His love isn’t crafty or slick. It’s not cunning or shrewd. In fact, all things considered, it’s quite childlike, and might I even suggest, sometimes downright ridiculous. His love bankrupted heaven for you. His love doesn’t consider Himself first. His love isn’t selfish or self-serving. He doesn’t wonder what He’ll gain or lose by putting Himself out there. He simply gives Himself away on the off-chance that one of us might look back at Him and offer ourselves in return.

His love leaves the ninety-nine to find the one every time. To many practical adults, that’s a foolish concept. “But what if he loses the ninety-nine in search of the one?” What if? Finding that one lost sheep is, and will always be, supremely important.

His love isn’t cautious. No, it’s a love that sent His Own Son to die a gruesome death on a cross. There’s no “Plan B” with the love of God. He gives His heart so completely, so preposterously, that if refused, most would consider it irreparably broken. Yet He gives Himself away again. The recklessness of His love is seen most clearly in this – it gets Him hurt over and over. Make no mistake, our sin pains His heart. And “70 times 7” is a lot of times to have Your heart broken. Yet He opens up and allows us in every time. His love saw you when you hated Him – when all logic said, “They’ll reject me”, He said, “I don’t care if it kills me. I’m laying My heart on the line.”

To get personal, His love saw me, 6 years ago, I was a broken down 18 year old girl with fear as deep as the ocean because I needed to make a terrifying decision, I had to decide to have a procedure that would either save my life or literally kill me; I was suffering from bad depression, terrible anxiety attacks almost every night, and PTSD. Yet, He saw fit to use me for His kingdom because He isn’t done with me just yet. I didn’t earn it and I sure as heck don’t deserve it, but He’s just that good. Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God. And 6 years later, I can proudly say I’m here today because of Him and the fact that He’s not done with me and my story.

Everyone has a story, that is just the tip of the iceberg of my story.

To the person who’s reading this tonight, He has reckless love for you too. You just have to trust Him. Sit in that. What does that mean to you? He loves us so much that He’s always there and we don’t have to go through stuff all alone….He’s right there with us. Now if that isn’t love, I don’t know what is.

Broken Vessels (Amazing Grace)

What comes to your mind when you think of Jesus? Easter? A bearded guy with blue eyes? I know for me, Jesus is everything. And I know for a lot of people, the reason that we can sing with hope and freedom and victory, is all because of the name of Jesus. Not because anyone is good enough to be in the presence of God, but because of Jesus. Because of what He did for us, we can freely come and worship Him; truly set free; not bound by what we’ve done, not burdened by all the areas in life where we’re not good enough, but alive in Him… in His righteousness, not our own.

We’ve been singing a lot of new songs in our church lately. For many years, our church has been bringing a new song, it’s an amazing gift and opportunity, and I pray that we would never take it for granted.

The prophet Isaiah, talking about bringing new songs, said this (Isaiah 42):

“This is what God the Lord says— the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it:

‘I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.

‘I am the Lord; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols. See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.’

Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth.”

I believe with all my heart, that when we bring these songs, they’re not just random melodies, random lyrics, or random thoughts about a God who once was. I believe that the living God, Jesus, is breathing His life, is breathing what He’s wanting to say, what He’s wanting to do in this day and age, at this time in history, in this place, in and through His people.

When we sing these songs, it’s like the prophetic is cutting through the atmosphere. The prophetic cutting through culture, lighting the way, showing what God wants to do. I pray that we’d all rise up and take a part in that. That we’d understand we’re all a part of it, not because we’re special, but because of pure hearts. He says; a broken and contrite heart, He will not despise (Psalm 51:17). That’s what He’s after.

I love that God takes pride in using broken vessels, ordinary people, like you and like me. It’s because of His amazing grace that our eyes are open to the fact that He wants to use us, to do what only He can do, so that people will see Him.

Whether you’ve been in church for thirty years or have never set foot in a church building, I want you to know that this grace, this amazing grace, is as much for you as it was for anybody; when Jesus died upon that cross, that it was to give you freedom as much as it was for anyone else.

Gracefully Broken

When it comes to true worship, there will always be a level of brokenness in the mix. In Psalm 51:7, the psalmist sang: My SACRIFICE, O GOD, IS A BROKEN SPIRIT; A BROKEN AND CONTRITE HEART YOU, GOD, WILL NOT DESPISE.”

Thought:

This is a raw song of surrender- no pose and not pretense- just the real, uncomplicated offering of a worshipper who knows what it is to experience weakness, and what it is to encounter grace. I find myself joining in with the psalmist- because the more I journey through this life, the more I realize God’s absolute perfection and strength – and in the light of that, my own damage and shortcomings. The beauty of all of that is our brokenness is never met by harshness, but by the gracious heart of God.

For sure, sometimes the way God deals with us is intense – but even the most full-on moments of being shaped by Him are soaked in goodness. He may let our foundations be shaken, or find other ways to alert us to our dependence on Him – but at all times there is a constant thread of kindness running through it all. As we surrender in worship, and give Jesus permission to form and fashion our hearts there is never any heartlessness or helplessness in the equation. Instead, there is purpose, warmth, and love.

We may be broken, yes. But we are gracefully broken.

Invitation:

Don’t try and hide your brokenness from God. Not only does He see it, but there’s a good chance that He’s got a plan to use it for His purpose and His glory. So, today, choose to be real with Him.

Prayer:

Father God, this heart – as broken and raw as sometimes it feels – is yours. Shape me. I trust my life to Your greatness and Your goodness. And in everything, may I be led to a closer walk with you. Amen.
